PhD Project: Machine Learning for Behavior Modeling

Travel demand modeling has evolved from aggregated trip- and tour-based models to activity-based models that predict which, when, where, and how long activities are conducted at an individual or household level. Due to different economic and social attributes, travelers have significant differences in activity preferences, travel targets, travel restrictions, etc., and have heterogeneous travel decision-making mechanisms. In the age of big data, the data driven research method on heterogeneous activity-travel behavior has become a new research paradigm. My research project will address the above modeling question using the inverse reinforcement learning with a certain degree of interpretability. In this way, the activity-travel chains can be incorporated into a dynamic assignment model, and then we can get some particular traffic states like multi-modal volumes. The equilibrium between activity pattern generation methods and assignment models would provide an insight for transportation management systems.
